Impact in Colombia
Colombia's soil is so generous that anything grows in it. Everyone knows the famous crop, cocaine. Fewer people know it grows on the same mountains, in the same soil, a few rows from the other one. Coffee. For most of my country's history, both crops paid the farmers miserably. The farmers up there never had a choice.
I am the other one. I am not here to fight Colombia's history. I am here so the world talks about me instead. Colombia's finest substance. Delirio ColdBrew coffee.
I come from Santa María, Huila, from farms where the same branch holds red cherries and green ones. The red ones are ripe. That is where the sugar lives. The green ones are early. That is where the bitterness comes from.
Most of the world's coffee is bought as a commodity, and a commodity has no opinion about ripeness. So the cherries get picked together, red, green and rotten, and the roaster burns the beans dark enough that nobody can tell. That is why people think coffee is bitter. Coffee is not bitter. Nobody was paid to wait for the red ones.
I reject that arrangement. The people who grow me hand-pick ripe cherries, and they are paid for the patience, not the tonnage. Then I am roasted slowly in the Bay Area so the natural sugars caramelize instead of char, and steeped for more than twenty hours in cold water. Two ingredients, Colombian specialty coffee and water. Nothing to hide, so nothing hidden.
That is the whole mechanism. Quality is created on the farm, by a farmer, and when quality is what gets paid for, the premium stays on the mountain. It becomes the difference between a family keeping its land and selling it, between the next generation staying and leaving, between the crop you can talk about and the one you can't. Scale is how I buy more of the harvest, and buying the harvest is how the choice stays real.
I was born at Stanford as a question: could a coffee be so delicious that people choose it for the taste alone, and could that choice, by itself, move value back to the farm. I am the answer, still being written.
So the ask is small. To create impact, all you have to do is drink delicious, naturally sweet coffee. I carry it the rest of the way.
“Get addicted to something that matters.”
